A couple of pictures

So i finally remembered to get the two pictures that we took of the plot that we viewed on Sunday.

And here they are.

It starts at the back fence where the “building” is. Comes out to the red post. (so the water butt/composter isn’t mine). And down to the bottom of the photo.

Everything in this picture is part of the plot except the two big trees at the back.

So as you can see there is a fair amount of work that is required. But still hopefully done in time to get a few crops in.

Viewed And Accepted

So I went to view the allotment on Sunday and it’s not that bad.

It sits at the end of one of the main walkways in the corner. Has 2 or 3 “parking spaces” next to it. There is a tap almost on the plot (although the water does get turned of in winter), very handy. It has 6 distinct beds 2 of which are in reasonable health the others are now mostly grass. Also happily it would seem that the plots around mine are in use and maintained. And as an added bonus, the site warden is only a couple of plots away and I have to past his plot to enter and exit the site.

As I have already said it is 5 rods so only a half plot. It comes with some bean growing canes (already in place), A fruit climbing frame (again in place (though it may move)), an old shelter come shed that needs clearing and repairing, a possible compost heap but will have to remove the brambles from it to find out, and a lot of waste to remove. My partner took a couple of pictures but I haven’t managed to get hold of her phone in order to get them. I will try to post them in the next couple of days.

If we manage to get down to the allotment on Sunday them I will get a few more pictures but we shall see.

Crop List

My first lot of veg will mostly be defined by what the animals eat. So with that in mind I will probably start with the following.
Cauliflower
Broccoli
Fine Green Beans
Spring Greens
Sprouts.

Also I will start the following as me and my partner eat quite a lot of them.
Raspberries
Strawberries
Onions
Potatoes
Red Grapes
Cucumber
And some shallots because mum asked me if I would.
I would like to try Cucumelons too but maybe not this year.

I’m not sure yet if I will grow herbs too.

I am aware that I need to look into companion planting too. This again will happen when I actually have a plot and when I know what is being grown where.

There might be more added to this list but it does depend on the state of the plot and how soon I can actually get down there and start.

The next post will be about the veiwing of the allotment. I might even be able to get some pictures, which would be good.

Drum Roll Please…..

So we get home on Saturday and on the doormat is a letter from the council.

I have been offered a 5 rod plot at the cost of £25 per year and a £10 deposit for the site key. And as it turns out my council also bump you to the bottom of the waiting list if you turn down a plot. So let’s hope I like this one.

Still I will try to book a viewing for next Sunday at the time the site shop is open as I want to have a look round there too.

I think I should really start thinking about what to grow. I’m not sure I’ll see much in the way of harvests this year mind as time is getting on but we shall see.

I think the next post will be about the crops that I would like to grow.

No News Is Not Always Good News

As I posted last time, I put my application for an allotment through just over two weeks ago now and ………… Nothing. Not even a whisper.

I don’t know, maybe I’m not being patient enough. But I would have thought that I would have heard something by now to say whether I’m on the waiting list or not.

I have been telling myself that the “delay” (no previous experiance to refer to) is being caused by the ending of the financial year and not that they just have a ton of other applications. Which to be fair is probably the most likely reason being that spring is on its way.

Still I guess all I can do is wait.

My next post should either be about me hearing back from the council or an idea of the crops I want to grow.
